Escala New Ice Climber Weekend
When the DC chapter of the American Alpine Club and Escala, the local Spanish-speaking climbing group, approached me about creating a video for their New Ice Climber Weekend, I was immediately hooked.
We wanted to go beyond just capturing the thrill of ice climbing and focus on the unique community behind it, especially as this group was breaking ground in an underrepresented space within the outdoor world. Though initially envisioned as a short profile, I saw the potential for something deeper and was given the freedom to expand.
The final piece dives into the story of Kathya’s and Escala’s journey, celebrating both identity and connection. From producing and directing to editing and coloring, I took on every role, even conceptualizing a social teaser—a lively salsa dance scene on the frozen Chapel Pond Lake, which perfectly set the tone of the weekend. This project was a chance to tell a story about more than just conquering a climb; it’s about the people and their shared experiences. I’m incredibly grateful to the American Alpine Club, Arc’teryx DC, and the volunteers who made it all possible, and I look forward to bringing these lessons into future projects.
